Bear story...

A long time ago, Martin or « Lou Moussu » in patois, Orso Pando in Latin and, of course, ours in French, had been living in Donezan. It was consumed in Usson by the lords of the keep in the 14 th Century.

Now already 3 years ago, a person considered rather queer declared having seen a bear above Quérigut. Smiles were on the face of the gendarmes who noted the given information. Same reaction in the district, however, it is quite true !

Not one but two bears : Caramelle and Boutxy, now disappeared Melba's little ones. Indeed, they arrived in Donezan, although we don't know how they managed to do it. Nevertheless, they are truly here.

Caught and radio-equipped at the refuge of Fournet in 1999, Boutxy weighed 130 kgs when he was 2 years old. He established his permanent dwelling place in Donezan, with a summer circuit which leads him to Aston via Ax-les-Thermes. Today he is a grown-up and weighs about 220-240 kgs. One has to say that boarding in Donezan is excellent ; he has well-balanced meals mixing savoury and sweet.

Typical menu

  • lamb or ewe
  • calf
  • honey directly taken from the hive for more freshness
The bear universe...

Bear tracks in snow...

If you bump into him, you can note how glossy his fur is and makes it « cosy » ! One almost fancies to touch him. But be careful not to as he is capable of running after a calf and catch it, and his paws are equipped with claws of several centimetres long... I have met him, so I know what I am talking about...

But may all this not prevent you from taking advantage of the thousand walks you can do in Donezan, this is not an animal who attacks man. If you see him, you will belong to the privileged fews, for a bear is very discreet...
