The iron mine of Boutadiol is located high in the mountains (more than 2000 meters high) in a vale which bears the same name. The iron ore shows on the surface of mountains. This is an opencast mine of small size. The iron nodules were partly extracted on the spot. Crushing zones are still visible as well as ruins of a hut. The ore was then loaded on the back of donkeys and mules and carried down to the vale.
Access : from Quérigut, take the forest road of Laurenti up to the forest refuge, then follow the marked path which goes up to the lake of Laurenti . When you arrive at the hut of Counc (now left in ruins but about to be restored), turn to the left of a big service tree, go down to the meadow, where cows usually go to sleep, and up to the scale of Boutadiol. Go deeper in the vale of Boutadiol down to a hut in ruins. Immediately on your right, take a steep path which climbs up to the mine. The path is not marked but it is quite easy to find out the area of the site. Plan about 1 ½ hour for the ascent from the forest refuge of Laurenti. Moreover, the mine area is indicated on the map I.G.N. (2248 East Quérigut - Gorges de l'Aude on a 1/25000 scale). |
